Cow Jumped Over Moon

In Luling, Texas home of Watermelons, barbecue, and oil wells, is a creative bent. A series of oil pumps line the main drag and rail road tracks. The city decided to decorate the pumps. This is maybe the most familiar to those who drive through the city.

Edge of Texas Hill County

In Luling, Texas located between San Antonio and Austin is Zedler's Mill. This historic site was once a prosperous mill processing everything from grain, lumber, and cotton. It sits besides a beautiful river, once the source of its power. The Texas Historical folks are trying to preserve this beautiful piece of Texas History.

Out to Pasture

Not exactly a vehicle of steel. This wagon piece had obviously been up against the tree for a long time. The small town of Chappell Hill is very historic was one of the first areas settled by German settlers coming to Texas from Europe in the mid-1800's. I wonder if this wagon could be one that was used to start a new life so far away from home? Probably not, but there was something very peaceful about this scene in the Brazos Valley of Texas on a hot summer's day.

Out to Pasture

This is just a "cute" cartoon-like truck. Could be a prototype for a new Pixar movie.

Out to Pasture

Off the main highway in Fredricksburg, Texas (about 2 hours west of Austin), was this old GMC tow truck. This was winter, so the vines that appeared to cover it had died away. The irony was that it was sitting in the side yard of a very expensive restored mansion. Maybe it's next for restoration.

Out to Pasture

Throughout the South, no matter the size of the town, or the demographic, there is a propensity to place "out to pasture" our various former modes of transportation. Is it all the land we have around us? Drive on any back road of a southern state and you will see the history of American transportation in fields of weeds, some just sitting, some serving a purpose. These will be the relics of our ancient civilization many years from now. Go figure!

Walls and Signage

A remnant of a unique American icon. In the fifties and sixties when cars were big enough to hold anywhere from two to twelve with three in the trunk, drive-ins were the primary entertainment for teenagers. Who cared about bad sound quality? No one was listening! These old theatres were some of the first to use neon in all of its glory. "American Graffitti" anyone?

Walls and Signage

Anyone who grew up in the Gulf Coast and had a late night craving for a chopped pork sandwich, fries, and a "coke" remembers the Pig Stands. Most are gone now having given way to calorie guilt and urban renewal.

Walls and Signage

On a farm to market road in Waller County. A farmer speaks his mind. Not every part of Texas is "red."

Walls and Signage

Can you count the advertisers on this one wall? This was tucked away in an alley in Lockhart, Texas.

Walls and Signage

Get off the beaten path. Avoid the ubiquitous Walmarts in small town Texas. These abandoned buildings speak of an era when communication was simple.

Fossil Rim Wildlife Conservation Area-Glen Rose,Texas

This deer had the most beautiful rack of antlers I had ever seen. It wasn't the size, or whatever the measurement is in "deer" terminology, it was they looked like velvet.

Giraffe at Fossil Rim

What a face! One has not lived until a giraffe slurps food out of one's hand. Baby giraffes were everywhere.

Zebra Family at Fossil Rim

Fossil Rim Wildlife area in Glen Rose, Texas is a nature lover's dream. This park is dedicated to preserving and nurturning animals from all parts of the world. They have a great gift shop and all proceeds to the preservation of this site. Wednesdays in the fall are the best time to go. Buy a bag or two of feed and watch out for the ostriches! They are serious about food! The zebras are agressive but beautiful.

Cemetary Art and Architecture

There is a great cemetary located off Broadway in Galveston, Texas. As in many older cemetaries that are filled with those who are of the Catholic faith, there is some grand statuary. This grave marker is intrinsic in its sadness.

McClennan County Courthouse-Waco, Texas

Texas has incredible grand old courthouses. Many have
been restored to their original grandeur. This one in Waco stood out as a thunderstorm was moving down from the North

Old Beauty, Courthouse-Lockhart, Texas

Lockhart is the home of Texas barbeque. However, it also has an incredible downtown area that takes the visitor back to the late 1800's. The courthouse is the centerpiece of this great town just about an hour from Austin, Texas.
